The translator, Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, has rendered Ibn Taymeeyah's treatise "Eedaah ad-Dalaalah fee Umoom ar-Risaalah" from volume 19 of Majmoo al-Fataawa (a collectio of religious rulings) iont very readable English. The significance of this translation being that it is perhaps the first book available in English exclusively on the topic of sprit-possession and exorcism in Islaam.
Ibn Taymeeyah's treatise provices a very clear, concise and authentic view of this intriguing subject based on the Qur'aan and Sunnah, the interpretation and experience of Sahaabah (companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him) and the early scholars of Islaam. The translator has also added an appendix consisting of a recent article written on the subject of spirit-possession and exorcism by one of the leading scholars of Saudi Arabia confirming Ibn Taymeeyah's views as both relevant and orthodox.
Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada, where he accepted Islam in 1972. He completed a diploma course in Arabic in Madeenah and went on to obtain a bachelor of Arts in Usool ad-Deen at the Islamic University of Madeenah in 1979 and a Master of Arts degree in Islamich Theology from the University of Riyadh in 1985. He has tauhgt Islamic education and Arabic on the junior high and high school levels at Mararet al-Riyadh Schools from 1979 to 1987. Presently he is enrolled in the Islamic studies doctoral program at the University of Wales. Among the author's published works are translations of Ibn Taymeeyah's Essay on the Jinn, Arabic Calligraphy in Manuscripts, The Devil's Deception of the Shee'ah, Khomeini: A Moderate or af Fanatic Shi'ite and The Mirage in Iran. He has also co-authoed, Plural Marriage in Islaam and authored the Qur'aan's Numerical Miracle: Hoax and Heresy, Evolution of the Madh-habs, Tafseer Soorah al-Hujurat, The Ansar Cult, The Fundamentals of Tawheed and Hajj and Umrah Accordingo to Qur'aan and Sunnah.
